BOMB SHOCKED BABIES
London babies who have been
bomb-shocked have reason to be
grateful to the British War Relief Society of America for the work
they are thancing to bring back health and strength to numbers of little nerve sufferers, in an airy suburb, furnished with a trapese, climbing-ropes and ludders, Estrid Dane gives 46 children courses of medical gymnastics two or three umes a week.

the heels, for instance, and swing her off the exercise couch into space; she will roll her about; hold her sprawling in mid-air.
CHILD WELFARE AND INDUSTRY
NOW THAT THE Minister of Labour is bring- ing women into industry mothers with young child- ren under the age of five present a special problem.
Dr. Edith Summerskill, M.P., told a representa- tive of "The Observer" that the Government should provide for these pre-school children throughout the country similar modern care to that made avail- able in a number of blitzed" areas.
There consideration is given to mothers with children under school age who have to remain
at home to look after their hus- bands in dockyards and other national work but who want to send their children. away from the cities.
They have no special knowledge of how to look aftor young children. "In those districts where the system of farming out young chil- dren with 'minders' exists to-day, the incidence of rickets is excep- tionally high. The system, in fact, is as out-of-date as the old work-

many excellent women in
the country who are capable of look- ing after children well, but these are not
the women who are
necessarily always
ready to taken on the extra responsibility of hav- ing a small child in their house- hold. The register which will be compiled for the 'minder system will be of women who are chiefly anxious to augment their income and who will be able to do this by having a child in the house- hold.
"The women will not necessari. ly be well versed in what con- stitutes a balanced diet, will they have a special knowledge child welfare. In these modern days, when the State spends mil- lions of pounds on child welfare services and on propaganda. In order to teach mothers the best methods of feeding and caring for their children, we should provide only the
best care for children under five who are either evacuat- ed from their parents or who are cared for outside their homes be- cause their mothers are engaged in industry."

"There should be co-ordination between the. Departments of Health Education, and Labour, in order that these children should be cared for either in nursery centres, or creches, where they will be fed and looked after by experts.
The 'minder' system is out of date, and it is deplorable that it should have been revived in these modern days."
