WAR PRISONERS' PAY STAFFS SLUR ON OUR SOLDIERS COUNCILS

WHEN A British officer is taken prisoner, money due to him is paid into his bank or to his agent.

But when an ordinary soldier is taken prisoner his money is only credited to him to be paid after inquiry.

In other words, a British officer whe surrenders is innocent proved gudly, but other ranks taken pristner ure guilty till proved innocent. And this is under a law dating back to the Napo- leonic Wars!

Because so many mem- bers of county council staffs have left recently to take up more highly paid. positions elsewhere, Middlesex County Coun cil has asked the Minister have never before, in my forty of Labour, Mr. Ernest Bevin, to apply the Es- sential Work Order to local government.

The question was raised by former War Minister Lord Mottas- tone, who asked the Goverument to arrange that pay due to soldier prisoners of war should be treated, as savings, and credited to them with the addition of interest of 24 per cent.

Drift To Country

"Another cause of moves is a desire to get to safer neighbour- hoods. There is a big response to posts advertised in country neigh- bourhoods.

"All kinds of people have made a move lately, from stokers and porters to important mem- bors of the clerical staffs," The County Councils Association will bring up the question at a committee meeting.
