CHEMICAL
SET FOUND
AFTER
TRAIN FIRE
Evidence of a communi- cation door being locked, and of the finding of the remains of a chemical set was given at the Ministry of Transport inquiry re- cently into the fire in the London-Newcastle ex- press, when six boys of Ampleforth College, Yorks, fost their lives.

near Claypole, Lines, and among the victims were two sons of the Belgian Prime Minis- ter, M. Pierlot.
Guard Dear said that the Grst thing that drew his attention to | anything unusual was the applica- tion of the brakes. He looked out. and saw flames coming out of the second of the thice reserved enaches.
Hole in Roof
They were teriale Bames. The train by then had almost stopped. and there seemed to be a big hole in the roof of the coach.
Father 1. D. Pozzi, who was in charge of the boys, said that when he was called to the coach he found flames coming from be- tween the back of two bucket seals close to the wall of the Compartment.
He had not seen any of the boys lighting matches, but he assumed they had been smoking, as this was a recognised this g.
"I thought at once of the ex- tinguishers," said Father Pozzl. "I ran the length of the coach and found to my horror that the com- municution door at the end was locked."
The train was not slowing down, so he himself pulled the communication cord and the train slowed down.
In reply to Col. Trench, he said the boys went in for chemis- try, but he had never seen them making any experiments on a journey.
Chemical Set Remains
A plateplayer said that when one of the burnt-out coaches was examined, the remains of a tin box containing small bottles fell from the centre of the coach.
Mr. T. H. Turner, chief chemist to the L.N.E.R., said it appeared that these were the remains of a chemical set, which was pro- bably being carried in a suitcase.
"It must have been a keen amaleur's set, but all the things that might start a fire in the set are obviously burnt out," he said. One of the corks of a bottle might have jumped out and some- thing which was safe when the journey started might have caught fire. "But," he added. "I cannot. of course, say that this is what actually happened."
Mr. H. C. Dickens, for Ample- forth College: We have never heard of this until to-day, but in- quiries will be instituted at the school. It may be that the boy who owns this set can be identiñed.
This remainder of the inquiry was held in private. Col. Trench's report will be published later.
