BRITAIN
THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S comprehen- sive policy which it is planned to extend over the whole financial, industrial, commercial and social activities of the country, was explained in the Com- mons yesterday by the President of the Board of Trade, Mr. Oliver Lyttleton, in presenting a Bill for the control of prices for goods and services.
General object of the policy is to assist the diversion of production and productive capacity to war purposes while keeping down the costs of the necessities of life.
Industrially this is secured by Government control of prices and distribution of raw materials and by rationing food and clothing.
Mr. Lyttleton declared that prevention of any further in- crease of wages can only be effected by maintaining the purchasing power of money or ensuring that the cost of a rea- sonable quantity of essential commodities is kept reasonably
steady.
Contributions to this end are made by the Chancellor's policy of mobilising extra purchasing |
and in- by voluntary power, voluntary saving, and high taxa- tion, and also by rationing.

enrolling 3,000 wardens who are needed to bring the Corps up to its requir- ed strength.
During the last three weeks, some 500 new recruits have signed up.

The Archbishops of Canterbury

both spoke at the Church Assembly yesterday on the need for Christian educa- tion at schools.
A resolution was passed "that this House, convinced of the need of true Christian education in all schools of the country and gratefully recognising the work of teachers in all classes of schools, gives general approval to the statement recently issued by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York and Wales and strong- ly urges that with the coopera- tion of various Christian com- munities, of the education authorities, of parents, of teachers and Christian citizens generally, speedy effect may be given to the five points therein contained."
The Archbishop of Canterbury after the passing of the resolution, said he would now take a repre- sentative deputation of the Church of England and the Free Churches to the Board of Educa- tion, if possible before Parlia- Wire- ment adjourned.-British less.
