DESERTION FROM GANDHI TEMPERS INDIAN POLITICS

THE INDIAN Christian community which has hitherto attracted less attention than its importance deserves promises to play a useful part in the poli- tical struggle now going on in India.

Twenty years ago this community numbered in all about 4,500,000 persons. By 1931 it had increas- ed to close on 6,000,000, a growth of 32 per cent. in 10 years.

Since then it has not only devel-1 oped further in numerical strength but the high proportion of ter- ates it contains is enabling it to exercise influence far beyond that to which nere counting of beads might seem to entitle it

Evidener of this is to be seen in a well-informed volume on India's future now published by one of its members. The writer is Mr. J. Chuma Durai, a highly culti- vated barrister of the Muddle Tem- ple in England. 1ts title is "Tor Choice Before India." Cape, London.)

This volume gives an inside ar- count of the present situation in India throwing new light on the political problems involved and in indicating that forces of good setise and moderation are growing up which may quite conceivably be- fure long fundamentally change the entire political bulatice.

The British hold that without such cooperation Indian self- government would be a disastrous arce. And this view is shared by many far-seeing Indians.

The fact, nevertheless, Is રી hopeful one that there is at last a real movement in India towards i the ending of the deadlock hitherto prevailing there; also that in this movement the Indian Christian | community is playing an Bupor- lant part.

CREWS TELL OF U-BOAT AMBUSH

Fifty survivors from two British cargo ships have been landed at an Eastern Canadian port.

They say their ships were sunk within two hours of each other by four U-boots lying in wait in the Atlantic. The two captains and twenty-nine other members of the crews are missing.

All the survivors are British.
