TALKS ON BLOCKADE ISSUES

Discussions are now proceeding in Washing- ton between British and American official repre- sentatives on certain as- pects of Britain's block- ade policy, states Reuter's Lobby correspondent.

The British Government have no intention of relaxing in any way their general policy on block- ade.

Interesting commentary on the Vichy Government's professed de- sire for foodships for starving Fance" is to be found in the re- cent seizure of two French ships which were taken into Gibraltar. One contained nothing but bananas, while the other, in ad- dition to one million litres of of rum, also carried 250 tons pineapples.

ba

I these days, such cargoes can considered Juxuries rather than necessities.

Nazi Shortages

Regarding the general effec's of the blockade, it is learned that the Germans are feeling a grave short- age of rubber, copper, nickel, al- oys. wool and tanning materials. Germany is believed to be eating into her stocks of oil, despite syn- thetic oil production and imports from Rumania and Russia,

By the end of the year Germany

is likely to be in serious difficul- fles about oll supplies if heavy at- tacks on her refineries continue, if The Navy retains controls of the Fastern Mediterranean and if the Naz's have to fight on land.-Reu- ter.

LATEST SHIPPING LOSSES

Mercantile losses due to Enemy action for the week ended midnight on March 23, which totalled 59,141 tons, are considerably less than in the preceding three weeks since the Battle of the Atlantic started.

Naval circles emphasise it must not be assumed that this great menace to the coming Bri- tish victory is yet mastered. It is freely recognised that 10sses be in the coining weeks may heavy.

This prospect, however, is not regarded as a cause for despon- debcy and it is emphasised in naval circles that the proper me- thod to assess losses is to study the average weekly figures of losses over a period of months rather than those of individual weeks.

Weekly average In August was 84,000 tons, September

October 103,000 tons,

86,000, November 86,000, December 70,000, January 55,000 and February 74,000.

For three weeks of March average weekly losses were 84,000 tons.
