BY PILOTS

"He was behaving in a very drunken way." This is not the beginning of a police constable's evidence, but the phrase used by a Hurricane pilot to describe the manoeuvres of a. JU. 88 bomber which he had attacked over Eng- land. Fighter pilots, when they talk about their scraps, often use unexpected and picturesque phrases. A Flight-Lieutenant, who frequently leads two squad- rons into battle, has a set phrase of his own. "I was driving the train' consisting of the A & B SQUADRONS," he writes in his report.

Another Flight Lieutenant has also described how he "steamed through the whole formation of enemy aircraft and then broke away downwards.” With a touch of the melodramatic, a Pilot Off- eer of a Hurricane Squadron told the Intelligence officer: "The bombers were in very tight but rough formation with the Oghters stepped up above. On our proach, the fighters climbed and formed a 'circle of death'."

A British pilot soon discovered how best to deal with these "pro- tective circles of Mes." One of hem dived into the middle of the circle and few round in the op- posite direction, picking off the Germans as they came within his sights. Fighter pilots are very modest about their victories. "We just couldn't miss-there were so many of them to shoot at," pilot explained. "The enemy air- craft were so thick we had Al- inost a permanent target," said a Flying Officer of a Hurricane auxiliary squadron.

one

But it isn't quite as easy as that.

A disabled JU. 88, the pilot making a desperate effort to re- gain his base across the Chan- nel, was described by a Flight Lieutenant as "crabbing along the surface of the water with one of his engines out of action."

This was apparently the sort of target a Spitfire Squadron Leader had been looking for when he told the Intelligence Officer that he had down down to the coast to "pick off lame ducks going home."

The "'dust-bin" is a common name for the rear gunner's lower position, in an enemy bomber.

A-German airman was killed when, as the victorious. Flying Officer put it, "his machine did a cartwheel, and the pilot was jet- tisoned into the sea, the aircraft hitting the water at the same time.'

With thoughts of the late Ital- lan air chief, a Pilot: Officer of an auxillary squadron wrote: when patrolling with my squad- ron I saw a large 'Balbo of enemy aircraft approaching from the Cast:"
