As a result of its convincing win in this event, it has now earned for its owner stake money totalling $9,409.

Considering the threatening weather Jockey Club were undecided until 10.30 a.m. to-day whe- ther to hold the Meeting or not there was a very fair crowd present for the Caulfield Stakes, which attracted 10 of the 40 entries, and for which Vis Major (Capt. Sokoloff) was made a firm favourite, with Prairie View, Gay Fox and National Courage next in demand.

When the ponies came out it was evident that the track was in a heavy condition and no fast times were to be expected.

Exciting Finish

The Ni Desperandum Stakes provided a real thrill when Col- lene's Sam's Choice (Mr. Black) beat Charlesber, second favourite in the Derby and hot favourite for this event, by a short head in a most exciting finish.

Iron Beauty went out in front from the start followed by Lovely View, Odeon, Eve of Deception, Charlesber and Sam's Choice. In the back straight Charlesber had moved up to fourth place and was running on the outside, followed by Sam's Choice. At the Rock) Charlesber was second to Iron Beauty with Sam's Choice third, three lengths behind. Charlesber entered the home straight first and Sam's Choice, after having passed Iron Beauty, was in hot Favourite Wins

MENACE

It is unconfirmably re- ported that the Vichy Ca- binet, after a long meet- ing, found the Japanese compromise proposal basically acceptable.

+

Latest reports from Tokyo state that no French reply was hand- ed in although the deadline for acceptance or rejection expired some hours before.

Japanese well-informed sources interpret the French silence as "lack of good faith."

"The Tokyo newspaper "Hochi" learns that Japan is already In- terpreting the silence as rejec- tion.

It adds the Government was to hold a conference among high of- ficials of the Foreign, War and Navy Offices to discuss Japan's next moves.--Reuter.
