The Champion Stakes, worth $3,000 to the winning owner, is the eighth race on the program- me, and though it is open to all the best contenders among the grifins, China Ponies. that have either won or been placed in a flat race at the Valley during the second half of 1940 and or at this Meeting, I doubt whether than

five ponies will Ko out to face the starter over 14 miles. Following are the probable star-

ters:-

O-LAN (MR. NEEDA), CONFUSION BAY (MR. PIH), NAVYLIGHT (MR. MOLLER). OF HARVEST (MEL

EVE DAVIS),

BURFORD. After its great win in the Chal- lenge Cup on Monday last, I don't think we need look further than 0-Lan as the new champion, but it remains to be seen how well it will run over the shorter dis- tance.

Burford failed to impress in the Challenge Cup, when the best it could do was to take third posi- tion, but I believe that I has been rested specially for the Champion Stakes. Given a strong jockey, 1940-Eve of Harvest (Encarna Burford will yet prove itself

dangerous contender.

However, whichever pony wins. the race will be fought out at a rattling fast pace, with the possi- bility of the record being lower- ed.

I nominate O-Lan to win, with Burford second and Navylight third.

What a grand race this should turn out to be when the new and old ponies fight for supremacy!

I expect to see the following starting:-

SAPPER (MR; DAVIS). DISTANT VIEW (MR. PIH). BAFFIN BAY (MR, NEEDA), FIRST LOVE (MR. LIANG). VICEROY (MR. BLACK). MANHATTAN (MR. HEARNE). ENDEAVOUR (MA. MOLLER). UNITED EXPRESS (MR. IP KUI-YING).

CANBELEGO HANDICAP

This race was introduced last year, when it was run over a dis- tance of 144 miles. It was con- fined to Australian subscription ponies classified "B" Class, and was won by Murrumbidgee, with Mr. D. Black up, in 2.15.1.

This year the race will be con- fined to "C" Class Australian ponies and the distance has been cut down to one mile.

KARA KARA HANDICAP

This event was run for the first time last year when, over a dis- tance of 14 miles, Brutus, ridden by Mr. D. Black, finished first in 2.19. The distance this year has been reduced to six furlongs and Australian the race is open to subs, of previous seasons.
