Some among them, were them- selves riders and had come down with their own harness and sad- dles to participate in the racing The gratitude for this release from a lonely exile was symbolised in the Canton Cup.
Foochow Cup
A similar cup was presented in 1863 by the merchants of Foo- chow; fellow exiles in the famous coast port, where tea-chests piled high in the godowns, and pig-tail- ed coolies sweated in the sun as they bore the lead-lined chests up the stately sides of three- masted tea-clippers bound for New York and London. It was rarely that these men were able to visit the Colony; but when they did they contrived their visit so that it should cover at least one race- meeting,
To go into the history of every trophy which has been donated for these racing events would re- quire in itself a special supple- ment. Suffice it to say that the generous spirit which moved the donors to present them is alive to- day, attesting that racing in Hong Kong is a sport which will always remain the beau ideal of local re- sidents..
