Endeavour Strongly Favoured For The Rooty-Hill Derby

Prairie View Outstanding Entry For Austral Derby

Outstanding Griffins And Subs. Discussed

By "Rapier”

HAVING GIVEN MY VIEWS ON THE NEW CHINA GRIFFINS IN PRE- VIOUS ARTICLES, I WILL NOW DEAL WITH THE AUSTRALIAN PONIES. TWO CLASSES OF THESE PONIES WILL FIGURE IN THE ANNUAL RAC- ING CARNIVAL WHICH STARTS ON SATURDAY WEEK, SUBS, AND THE GRIFFINS, THE LATTER BEING INTRODUCED FOR THE FIRST TIME.

In view of the large number subscribed for this year, I will confine my remarks firstly on the Aus- tralian subscription griffins and then the griffins.

After having watched the new ponies in train- ing for some time, it is now possible to pick out the more prominent of the entries for the Rooty-Hill, Derby, which, although not attracting as much attention as the Hong Kong Derby, is nevertheless considered by owners an exceptionally good race to win.

This event has attracted 66 races over distances from a mile

I don't think I am far wrong in stating that Endeavour, belonging to Mrs. Chuong Ho-yen, is, at the moment, the favourite. This pony has invariably done well in train ⚫ing and after watching its recent gallop over the Derby Distance. with Mr. Peter Wei up. against Iron Belle (riding boy), a griffin. when it clocked 3.01.1, with a last quarter of 27.4 apparently with- out effort, I am confident that it will be hard to beat providing its further training does not suffer any setback.

I understand, will be under the control of Mr. Donald Black, our

champion jockey. It was recently taken out by him for a 14 miles gallop, which it covered in 2.32 with a last quarter of 27.1. It should certainly prove dangerous over the Derby distance,

Vitamin M is another pony which has a strong following. It is in the pink of condition at the momert and it will not surprise if if places.

Castle Hill may not be up to the standard of the ponies mentioned above but Mr. Black will be on top and one cannot, at this stage, Endeavour will in all probabi. tell what this combination will do, lity give its owner the privilege while Strathalbyn, belonging of being the first lady to win Mr. J. Bendemeer, owned by Mr. P. M Hoo, is certainly good to look at;

GRIFFINS

As far as the Australian Griffins are concerned, main interest will be centred round the classic event, the Austral Derby. which will be run on February 17. The new arrivals have done some fast work during recent weeks, and while it is no easy matter at this stage to spot the likely. winner, I do not think I will be far wrong in nam- ing Prairie View, belonging to Mr. Li Lan-sang, as the pony most likely to succeed. •

Powerfully built, it has prov. ed itself a staver-lt recently did the mila in 2.00 with a fast quarter of 28.1 without being fully extended-and it should command most attention.

Mr. Li has also entered three other ponies. Distant View, Misty View and Mountain View, but Prairie View is better over ton distance races, although Distant View should prove a worthy un- derstudy.
