MARSHAL PETAIN
MAKES COMPROMISE OFFER TO HITLER
ADMIRAL DARLAN, accompanied by General Huntziger, Vichy War Minister, is re- ported to be in Paris with counter-proposals from Marshal Petain to Herr Hitler's de- mands.
It is believed that the proposals suggest a compromise whereby M. Laval will be includ-| ed in the Vichy Government without accept- ing Hitler's more drastic demands.
The Vichy correspondent of a Swiss newspaper declares that M. Laval told Admiral Darlan that he would not mind handing over French naval bases in the south of France and Tunis so long as Germany would not take over the French Fleet and the Army.
This correspondent also declares that M. Laval stated that he would not join the Vichy Cabinet unless he could gain control of the Police. the Press and the radio.
More Violent
In the meantime, threats from the German-contr.lled press and radio in Paris continue to becom2 more and more violent. The latest threat is that unless Marshal Petain can reach
an agreement the next problem will be to save the Marshal.

VACCINATION
REFUSAL NOT BAR TO R.A.F.
Refusal to be vaccinated or in- oculated is not a disqualification for enlistment in the Royal Air Force.
A German station in Stuttgart, broadcasting in French, said. "Re.. Attention of recruiting officers member there is only an armistice has been recently drawn to the between Germany and France. | instruction that inoculation and and peace has not been estab- vaccination can only be done by lished. If the position remains consent, and that recruits must not the same for the present o be rejected if they refuse. changes for the worse as it is 'ikely to. Germany will have to impose much
more severe peace terms. We must, therefore, warn France.'
A. Directorate
The latest rumour s that, in- stead of a triumvirate, there may be a directorate of four under Marshal Petain, the other mem- bers being M. Laval, Admiral Darlan, General Huntziger and M. Baudoin.
All reports of a solution which may be reached should be re- garded as speculation.
Political circles in Berlin show great reser ve concerning French policy and
no declaration has been made at the Wilhelmstrasse concerning the formation of the new National Party in Paris or the attitude of the Vichy Govern- ment.
Call For Recruits
Radio stations in unoccup'ed France are urging young French- men to join the army. This fol- lows the recent appeals for young men the join the French navy.— Reuter.
