If South had a five- card spade suit (a distinct possi- bility despite his failure to rebid spodes), the only game might lie at spades rather than no-trumps;| or perhaps, there might even be a slami in the cards. These avenues would be left unexplor ed it North just raised to three no-trump, so
North bid three spades.
And here South, with amazing inconsistency, passed, fearful that North was trying to "sign off." South forgot that he had invited a game and that North's bid of three spades was a forward-look- ing bid hence an acceptance of the game invitation. Had North held a weak hand, she would have raised spades on the round instead of showing her dia- monds, or she could have passed two no-trump instead of bidding three spades. South's inconsis- tency thus was responsible missing an easy game.
