IN PUBLIC
Punishment of a party of Ro- yal Field Artillery man is being a public spectacle 111 21 North Yorkshire village.
For mure than a week inhabi- tants have gathered at their doors - and scores of evacuees have
fend on the market cross-to watch five young men with full nack march for an hou three Imas daily up and down one of the hully streets,
This has been part of their punishment for a nalitary offence.
Motorists passing through the village have been held up by
onlookers.
No complaint can be made that the punishment was improperly. ordered that is not the concern of the villagers but the selection of the punishment place has led to many protests to the clerk of the parish council,
The village feels that the men no matter what their crime, should not suffer public humiliation,
Medieval
"No prisoner sentenced by a civil Court would have to put up with it." said one resident.
"It is going back to the me- dieval days of stocks, ducking chairs and public fleggings.
"Surely no crime warrants a British soldier being made a laughing stock,"
The headmaster of the village school said "It is disgraceful. It would be better if the men kept their energy for the Germans."
Outside the village thers are miles of moorland.
The largest landowner in the district is willing to place land at the disposal of the military where punishment could be carried out out of sight.
WAR PRISONERS BATTLE DRESS
Large quantities of British battle-dress uniforms and great- coats from War Office stocks are being sent to Germany through the International Red Cross at Geneva for our prisoners of war in German camps.
Sir Edward Grigg, Under-Secre. tary for War, explained in a Par- liamentary answer that under the Geneva Convention captor States contract to supply clothing, un- derwear and footwear to prisoners of war. He added that the United States authorities have been ask- ed to press the German Govern-. ment to carry out their obliga- tions in this respect.
