The reasons for keeping the right elbow near the body are obvious. It encourages swing straight back from the ball, the hands in close to the body thus preventing any tendency to let the clubhead stray outside the imaginary path from the ball to, the hole. This may not seem important but as the downswing appro- ximates the path of the back- swing it can be important at impact. For the swing which comes onto the ball from out- side the line of #light can cause a considerable slice. With the elbow in close the chances of this happening are reduced to a minimum.
