AGAIN

DISCUSSED

Singapore and islands in the Pacific are now being discussed in Congress cir- cles in Washington in connection with the pro- posal that Britain be ask- ed to post some collateral against supplies to be re- ceived under the Roos8- velt lend-and-lease plan.'

Among the suggestions heard in the capital is one that the United States should acquire from Britain strategically placed · i5- lands such as the Gilbert, Ellice, Phoenix and Tokelau islands, which form a curve round the Ja- panese mandated area and which are known to contain harbours suitable for United States air bases.

In addition, it is suggested that the United States should acquire some rights in Singa- pore for the general protection of the Pacific intérests-of Bri- tain and America.

While many Congress leaders would undoubtedly agree to the acquisition of the Pacific islands, the isolationists would .be likely to raise the cry that the acquisi- tion of rights in Singapore would be nearer to being aid to Britain than safeguarding, the interests of 'he United States-Reuter.:
