heartening news of the BEEN SENT BY THE NETHER

de Gen. expansion of Gaulle's following has spread in France, there are various signs that a slow reawakening of na- pro- tional feeling is in gress.

The general impression to be gathered from the controlled Press is that the writers paid by Germany are hoping and praying for a rapid German victory, so that they may be proved right and escape from paying, sooner or later, the penalty of their trea- chery,

Meanwhile-Gringoire, a scur- rilous weekly, which lives on scandal and political "it- bits," is showing caution where Gen. de Gaulle is concerned. In the last issue to reach London, though the one paragraph in which the General is mentioned is un- pleasant in tone it speaks of the "robust" answer which he made to the news that he had been sentenced to death-"We who go on fighting are all more or less sentenced to death, anyway."

This can only mean Gringeire suspects that many of its readers have a soft spot in their hearts for the Free France movement. Otherwise it would attack him as it attacks Mr. Churchill.
