· SUCCESSFUL INSIDE-FORWARD PLAY

ON HOW TO PLAY SOCCER

By "Referee”

INSIDE-FORWARDS are the big shots of the attack, finishing the work of wing players and the half-backs with goals. Successful inside play is one of manoeuvre, subtle combination, and accurate shooting. A trio of inside players possessing these gifts, and the ability to use them individually and in collaboration with each other, and who also possess a fine turn of speed and physical courage, would be almost invincible in attack.

While it is the inside forward's play to force the main attack and do most of the goal shooting, it must be remembered that he has an obligation also to the defence should it need his help. As a fourth half-back he performs great service during moments of pressure when the defence is being harassed. successful inside-forward should be able to execute these two functions with equal ability.
