PUTTING ON THE

North's hand, while no rock- crusher, was worth an opening bid. Не expected to show his minimum strength by a rebid of one ΟΙ two no-trump clubs ir South responded with one of a suit. But, as it happened, East made an overcall

and South had to bid two of his best then - And suits.
North was in trouble.
He couldn't pass, since South's free bid was forcing. He couldn't besides bid two no-trump; for having no spade stopper, his hand was not nearly good enough for that strong rebid. He could, it's true, bid three clubs the least - but encouraging bid available that would suppress the good it in diamonds and risk a bad fit in clubs. So North was compelled to bid three diamonds -a rather strong-sounding bid, inviting three no-trump.

It was at his next turn that North found a chance to slow down. Instead of going to four dia- monds, North bid four chibs. That permilted South to bid four diamonds; and at lest North had a chance to pass. At many tables, with identical bidding up to that point, North Bid 'four diamonds and South then went to five, hop- ing to find a doubleton spade in the North hand. Those players got a bad score, of course, since they lost three spade tricks before they could even get started.
