Enormous Dumps Of War Material Captured Intact
(From Reuter's Special Correspondent in the Western Desert)
I HAVE JUST ARRIVED AT SIDI BARRANI AFTER A TWO DAYS' JOURNEY ACROSS THE DESERT BY THE 200-MILE ROUTE FOLLOWED BY OUR MECHANISED FORrces at thE BEGINNING OF THEIR DRIVE TO THE LIBYAN FRONTIER.
Only after such a journey is it possible to appreciate the magnitude of the British vic- tory; throughout the trip we passed an almost ceaseless stream of captured Italian tanks, lorries, armoured cars and prisoners being taken back to bases.
At some points we saw Italian ammuni- tion dumps all intact, covering areas of a couple of square miles each.
Although a breakdown delayed our cars we were able to push on without touching any of our own rations, knowing we should continually find dumps of Italian tinned food along the route.
The Italians destroyed virtually Bug Bug area alone, signalled nothing: they hadn't time to do urgently for assistance as they to continue the were anxious advance without being humpered by acting as warders.
So.
Only when the great fortified encampment at Nibeiwa, where our armoured division wiped out General Maletti's crack desert column in a couple of hours after the British blitz began, has been this seen, can the brilliance of initial victory be fully appreciat- ed.
