When police went to the house they found the woman lying on her back on the floor. A carving knife was still in the wound.
Cole made a statement in which he said: "I picked up a knife from the table and stabbed her in the back. It ran through her like running through. butter."
Mr. Evans said the prosecution were unable to suggest any mo- tive. There was evidence of quarrels, but there was nothing to suggest that they had had a quar- rel that night.
