JEW SUSS FLEES. IN NO MOTIVE

WOMAN'S DRESS CASE

LION ("JEW SUSS") FEUCHTWANGER, aged fifty-six, writer of tales of human tragedy and fall- ing empires, has arrived in New York to end a flight across Europe as exciting and fantastic as anything in his novels.

Small, frail and insignificant, "A young American smuggled he did not look as if he had a me woman's clothes. I took them

Then I dashed to a car which was waiting at the water's edge and we drove away.

But in faltering English Feuchtwanger, who is a German Jew, told how he escaped from a French internment camp after the armistice and fled to safety disguised as a woman.

He went to France when Hit- Jer came to power, and there he wrote bitter pamphlets against the despoilers of his homeland and persecutors of his race.

Confessed, Say Police

There seemed evidence that when the husband was away Cole slept on a sofa in the kit- chen. When the husband came home on leave Cole slept at the house at Mr. Girl's request. About 12.40 a.m. on August 23, said Mr. Evans, Cole staggered up against the door at Wimbledon Police Station,

He said: "I've killed a woman at Hartfield-crescent." He start- ed to sob and said: "I stabbed her in the back. Why did 1 do it?"

When police went to the house they found the woman lying on her back on the floor. A carving knife was still in the wound.

Cole made a statement in which he said: "I picked up a knife from the table and stabbed her in the back. It ran through her like running through. butter."

Mr. Evans said the prosecution were unable to suggest any mo- tive. There was evidence of quarrels, but there was nothing to suggest that they had had a quar- rel that night. There was no sign of any struggle. There was no sign of any struggle. Cole appear- ed to have stabbed the woman without warning.

SOVIET IS LENIENT

بت

The Soviet authorities are re- ported to be adopting a more lenient attitude towards the Polish and population of White Russia the Western Ukraine. Many: im- prisoned Poles have been freed.

The pro-German Ukrainian, Hetman Skoropadski, is now in Cracow, in German-occupied Po-.. land, and a Ukrainian legion is being formed with headquarters in Cracow and detachnemts, in three other towns.

It is suggested by Poles in London that. the. frid.idller atti- tude of Russia to the Poles is a result of German: attempts to use Ukrainians for anti-Russian acti- vities.
