WREN SAVED BOMBED ST. PAUL'S

U STOOD IN the shadows of St. Paul's late in the afternoon and saw how a Nazi high explosive bomb had made rubble of the High Altar and torn and twisted the sacred ornaments of Britain's most famous cathedral; writes a London reporter:

Mr. Tanner, the verger, stood by my side. It was a long time before he spoke. Then he said: "We can only be thankful that the rest of the cathe- dral has been saved. There will be services as usual in the Crypt.”

They hit St. Paul's in a recent raid. But once again the cathedral had a remarkable escape. Wren built well; the fabric still stands firm, the Choir is: undamaged, and everyone who sees the great rec- tangular hole gaping in the roof must marvel that the damage was so small.

I made my way out of the Ca- thedral, past the spot where they dropped the time-bomb that was meant to destroy St. Paul's but was killed by the men of the Roy- al Engineers,

But the beautiful black and gold marble High Altar-erected about 60 years ngo-was obliterated. The Bishop's chair was flung against one of the wrought iron sanctuary gates, its carving 'badly: scarred. The pediment. of the stone reredos was slightly dam- agedi but the Crucifix and the ather figures were untouched.,
