Private Enterprise In Shelter Building

Proof against a. direct

hit from a 500-lb. bomb, a private air raid shelter has: just been completed in Hong Kong for its Chinese. owner, by C. E. Warren & Co., St. George's Build- ing. Plans for the shelter. were drawn up by Mr. T. C. Yuen, a local architect. who has constructed shel- ters in Chungking.

The special feature of the shel- ter is the detonating-slab, a mas- sive piece of special, concrete which takes the full force of the exploding bomb. So far as is known, it is the only private shel-· ler in Hong Kong protected against a direct hit by this means.

Measuring 37 feet by 34 by three deep, the slab alone took 350:250- lb. bags of special cement, and had to be laid "in one go," taking exactly. 22 hours from start to Anish.

It more than covers the actual shelter below, and when the work Is, finally completed.. will be hid- den under the front lawn.

Be- tween the bottom of the slab and the top of the shelter are five feat of mixed earth and sand, an effec- tive cushion for the concussion effects of the exploding bomb.

Deep Down

The shelter itself, deep down in the ground, consists of an air- tight, water-tight concrete cham- ber measuring 12 feet by 15 feet by eight feet high, with rein- forced concrete walls, roof and floor a foot thick. Roof and floor "Snowcrete," covered with while white tiles are used on the four walls, making cleaning easy. Two gas-tight ventilators are it- fed, and with these closed the room will accommodate from 15 to 20 people for about three hours in comfort.

Entrance to the shelter from the house is provided by a small con- crete "outhouse" with steps lead- ing down into a long corridor, sloping steeply downward, at the foot of which a gas-tight door opens into the chamber itself, 30 feet away!

Should the entrance he blocked by debris or other damage, those in the chamber can get out through an emergency exit on the other side of the chamber, through another gas-tight door. This opens into a corridor lead-. ing out through the hill-side into the pathway below the house, some 30 feet away.

Exits Wide Apart

Entrance and emergency_exits are thus almost 100 feet apart, reducing the odds of both being damaged during a raid to a negli

Incidentally, both gible figure. corridors from the shelter cham- ber are themselves protected by smaller "wing" detonating slabs similar to the main slab.
