VICHY ESCHEWS 'POLITICS'
(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL")
The Vichy Government has decided to suspend the yearly sessions of the departmental general councils, which are usual- ly held in October.
The decision is motivated by the Government's desire to avoid. the unnecessary agitation under present tragic circumstances.
The councils were elected on a universal suffrage basis, and their object was to assist the Prefects with different matters of local administration.
Although, during the yearly sessions, the general councils usually voted on motions of gen- eral policy, the sessions are often marked with heated political-de- bates.
Honceforth, the local admin- istration will be exclusively en- trusted to prefects, who will be assisted by special administra- tive committees, whose mem. bers will be appointed by. the Government...
Special care will be taken to see that they are free of any po- litical pressure. Havas.

INTERVENTION IN FAR EAST

THE BELIEF THAT Washington encouraged London to re-open the Burma Road is expressed in the Catholic newspaper "La Croix," says a message from Clermont-Ferrand.

IT LOOKS AS though the Ark Royal has been sunk again, or nearly. It is claimed in Rome that the Italian Fleet did not run and that a heavy British cruiser has been sunk and other British naval ships gravely damag- ed.
According to an Italian communique, this was the result of a naval battle, in which the Italians themselves admit the loss of a des- troyer and two torpedo boats.
The dramatic engagement, if it occurred, and there is no confirmation, was the first of its kind in the Mediterranean.
It was immediately followed, says the-Italian account, by. mass Italian aerial dive bombing at- tacks on British warships, as a result of which an aircraft car- rier was struck, its prow being badly damaged by a large calibre bomb while other bombs smash- ed in the starboard side.

BURMA AS A
STORM CENTRE
(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL")
The Vichy Govern- ment's determination to take a hand in all French economic activity is ex- pressed in an interview granted by the Finance Minister, M. Yves Bouthil- lier, to a Bordeaux news-. paper.
"There can be no question of the normal functioning of the law
of
supply and demand," he said, "since the market is restrained by the blockade and, therefore, prices will be anything but stable.
