LOOKING INTO THE PAST

Occasion When England's Test Cricket Went On Strike

Pleasant To Hark Back A Space

WITH THE temporary cessation of Test Matches owing to the war, and the consequent lull in the aver- green struggle for the Ashes, Englishmen all the world over are left high and dry with only their memories to fall back on for the time being. Now- adays such placards as “Englant In Diré Danger" or “England Faces Mighty Task” would mot only he out of place they might even be misconstrued by those not versed in cricket press parlance. 'Those days of momentous placards, whon haggard petles- trians fought for a paper to learn what havoc thre Aussies might have been wreaking on our eleven, have passed momentarily into abeyance.

But wherever there are one or more Englishmen gathered to- gether, talk will invariably revert to the Tests at some time after the latest war news has been .com- pletely digested. In these circum- stances it is pleasant to hark back a space and review some of those mighty encounters .once again,

One momentous occasion was when the English éleven went on strike, and the spectators were in their seats ready to watch the game while the team was still in a state of indecision.

When spectators passed through the turnstiles at Kennington Oval on August 10, 1886, they wonder- ed what team England would place in the field against the Aus- tralians.

The first win was the outcome of an extraordinary performance, Passing reference may be made to it, although it is rather the scope of this article.

The Surrey Committee toolt the view that this was an improper method of procedure, and they refused to double the fee, as they put it, "at the point of the pistol." When the news leaked out of the threatened strike it caused a big sensation in cricket circles.
