FASTEST FIGHTING 'PLANE

THE WORLD'S MOST HEAVILY ARMED, FASTEST AND MOST VERSATILE TWO. SEATER FIGHTING 'PLANS IS BEING PRODUCED IN CONSI- DERABLE NUMBERS AT THE REPUBLIC. AVIATION COR- "PORATION'S FACTORY IN FARMINGDALE, N:Y., ACCORD- ING TO STATEMENTS BY OFFICIALS.

The plane is the "Guardsman" dive-bomber, capable of releasing, 1,350 pounds of high-explosive bombs simultaneously while hurt-" ling earthward at speeds exceeding 370 miles an hour.

This bomb load includes one projectile weighing 750 pounds and six 100-pound wing bombs. The giant fuselage bomb is cradled in a special displacing mechanism, developed by Republic, permitting release of the bomb with accuracy in an almost vertical dive.

The "Guardsman" is likewise armed with two 30-calibre fuse- lage guns, synchronised to fire through the propellor, and a flex- ble 30-calibre gun mounted in the rear cockpit.

This latter weapon is rotata- ble and can be fired in all direc. tions, forward, rearward, to either side and above or below the 'plane.

With bombs removed, the "Guardsman" becomes an effective pursuit-interceptor to attack up- posing bombers or other aircraft. It is powered by a Pratt and Whitney Twin Row Wasp Engine.

WHAT OF HITLER'S

FIFTH COLUMN

IN BRITAIN?

"WHAT OF HITLER'S Fifth Column in Great Britain? Short of the supreme test, it is impossible to say for sure. What is evident is that during the appeasement period the Germans spun a web of friendship for Nazi Germany among the more gul- lible or more dissatisfied members of the ruling class, (write Mowrer and Donovan. American journalists, m a review of the situation).

"It is obviously a triumph, in a country so proud as Britain, to have created so weak a satellite party as the British Union of Fascists. Organisations like the Link, the Anglo-German Fellowship and the Christian Fellowship duped any number of high- placed Englishmen.

NAZI LEADERS GANGSTERS

While Mr. Duff-Cooper, was de- nouncing Hitler in an English broadcast, more bitter denouncia- tion was being poured over the ether from Canada.

The speaker was Mr. Fred T. Birchall, Chief European Corres pondent of the "New York Times" irom 1934 to 1939.

Addressing himself to Hitler His sneaks and spies everywhere tell him what people are saying about him" - Mr. Birchall said the reply of "our plain people" to the Fuehrer's peace offer was "the challenge and the defiance of des cent people everywhere."-

"We cannot accept peace with you, because you are a gangster and the men under you are also gangstera."

He wondered whether Goering had looted the Legion of Honour from Versailles.

"One hears hints of persistent 'pro-Germanism' in London City circles.
