Clothes, Make-Up And
Dress, make-up and manner. isms, fashion the various types of women-that is the theme of a novel, show at the New York World's Fair, Sixteen girls were chosen from ordinary walks of life and were refashioned to por- tray certain roles of womanhood. A modern farmer's wife, a subur ban mother, a sophisticated play girl, a sun-loving sportswomar. and a doctor's wife were the ones that caught my attention.
There isn't a professional mode! in the group, Not one of them was born an "oomph" girl, yet each is a streamlined beauty wearing her clothes with a charm- ing, convincing manner. One is amazed when told that one of these girls was a dowdy school teacher, another a soda clerk and still another a filing clerk. "Those charmers?" you question. "Well, tell me how it was done!"
Experts Had A Hand
Each individual "type" was so fashioned to complement the car she drives. For instance, the out- door girl, with bare-knee fashions. drives a snappy sport roadster in which are thrown her tennis rac ket and golf clubs. Her play clothes are casual and so are her Inake-up and coiffure. She has a friendly personality and looks ost if she lived under the sun most of the day..

Whereas the doctor's wife is mare dignified-wearing a long white dinner dress and gay red silk shawl. She must help her. husband with his profession, she must look and play the role of a gracious hostess and sympa- thetic friend. She drives a more expensive car for prestige. That girl in true life was an unattrac tive school teacher who had little idea how to dress attractively or use make-up to advantage.
Mannerisms
The Farmer's Wife Goes to Town: This is the wife of summer, 1940, dressed to enhance her charms and increase her comfort while she drives into town to shop or pauses for tea. It's one of the costumes shown in a unique fashion show at the New York World's Fair.

Appropriate and smart hair styling made almost miraculous changes in the girls' appearances. All the cuts and coiffures
were simple but keyed to the age of the girl and the shape of her face and the role she was playing.
Almost all the figures required hips slimmed, bosoms lifted and changing. Waistlines were nipped, legs and thighs streamlined.
