THRILLS ON FIRST DAY OF AQUATIC CHAMPIONSHIPS Chan Chun-Nam's Great Win In The 220 Free-Style Ng Nin Smashes A Record: Misses V. Churn And Lily: Sadick Win Ladies' Events

NG NIN,

TROPP AND BAILEY BOWL WELL

By "Adrem"

ONE OF THE MOST thrilling 220 free-style races in the history of the championships; the smashing of the 100 yards breast-stroke record by Ng Nin, and a great last-minute effort by Miss Vivienne Churn in the Ladies' 50 yards free-style event were the highlights of the swimming at Victoria Recreation Club yesterday the first of the three days allocated for the championships, An indication of the interest which has been and is being taken in the Colony championships this year, was the packed galleries as early as 5.30 p.m., nearly 45 minutes before the first event was due to be swum.

The women's 200 yards free-

The first event, the 220 yards free-style, provid-style relay was disappointing in ed an excellent opener and the result was in doubt that two V.R.C. teams received until the last two yards. Chan Chun-nam, the even- virtually no opposition. Chung tual winner, has never been extended like he yesterday.

un-

His normal practice is to rush away into a lead which he usually has little difficulty in maintaining. Yesterday he figured in the usual role of having to follow his biggest rivals. After the first two lengths, Ng Nin went out in front) followed by Huang, with Chan third. About two yards separated cach swimmer. This order wasi maintained until the last two lengths, Huang, somewhat sur- prisingly, standing up to the pace very well,

Entering the last 20 yards, Ng turned badly and Chan, now in the middle of a great rally and] making great speed, jùst caught; the tiring Ng Nin on the tape for a grand victory. Huang was] just behind

Chan's success can be attributed to his ability to keep up a steady pace, and 'to great reserves of stamina. There can now be lit. tle doubt that he will win the 440 and 880 events.

MISS LILY SADICK (Sa Wal-ying).

Record Crashes

It was generally expected that the breast-stroke record, now that 'the "butterfly" 'stroke has been recognised, would topple, and topple it did, dlthough not by us large a margin asnost people thought it would, only (1-2/5 secs. being clipped off the mark-set by Chaine last year:

Ng Nin really showed how the "butterfly" stroke should be done. Although he must have <been tired-after his effort in the 220 free-style, he maintained a killing pace and won easily. Luis Remedios gave little away for two lengths but was tiring fast towards the end.
