Even if it were a dictated set- tlement, the Versailles Treaty did its best to meet the conflicting needs of the European nations and it gave to many subject orj divided peoples the boons of na- tional unity and freedom.. This aspect of the Diktat of Versailles will certainly be reversed by Hit-

A final feature of the Diktat of
under the New Order is that all the States of Europe were left free, under that wicked system, to adopt whatever form of govern- ment they preferred. They,'all' adopted democracy though many lof them were not ready for it.
•
The New Order will get rid of the abomination of democracy and political liberty throughout Europe. Every State which is permitted to preserve some, sem- he blance of independence will compelled to re-organise itself on the German or the Italian model, as a police-State, in which all freedom of thought and speech, all independence of action by Churches, Trade Unions or other organisations will be firmly sup- pressed by an ever-present secret police, enforcing its authority by means of the torture of concentra- tion camps.
Such will be the New Order which the Tiger and his Jackal ¡will impose upon Europe if they are not successfully resisted: a system of slavery and lawless tyranny wielded by knots of mer- ciless, gangsters; a system which would sentence the Continent that has been the source of civilisation to misery, decay and stagnation.
There is only one surviving bar- rier to this dreadful ruin. It is the resistance of Britain and the British Empire. They are fight= ing not only for their own exist- ence, but for the survival of civilisation, in Europe ond Throughout the world.
