and Manchukuo.
The new tennis king is. Feli- icisimo Ampon "The Mighty Mite" of the Philippines.
in
Peculiarly enough it was tennis, a branch of sports in which Japan has persistently us- serted her superiority over
the
nations in the Far East in the past, that the Philippines made her best stand against the Nip- ponese in the Asia Athletic meet. And that was due principally to the performance of the diminu- tive Ampon.
Outstanding Tennis Star
Japanese tennis critics regard" Ampon as the outstanding net star that has appeared in the Oriental skies in the past decade and predict that he will develop into the greatest player in this section of the world. Already they compared him with the great Jiro Yamagishi and the late Jiro Sato.
In the Tokyo meet, Ampon out- classed Japan's No. 1 ace, F. Na- kanao by the scores of 6-3, 7-5 and he and Sanchez subdued the empire's outstanding doubles pair made up of Nakano and Tsuruta by the count of 8-6, 6-4. San- chez suffered the only defeat pk the Philippine net team in the Tokyo series when he lost to Tsuruta, Japan's No. 2 ranking are, by the scores of 6-8, 6-8. The Filipino pair defeated the Manchukuo team three matches in a row to win the Tokyo meet championship.
one
When the scene of the games moved to Osaka, Ampon played three singles matches and doubles match paired with Dr. Alfredo Diy, playing coach of the Philippine team.. Most of the matches were played in drizzling rain. The tournament was an open competition,
Оп the first day Ampon 'disposed of Fujikura, 6-3, 6-4, and eliminated Olda, also of Japan, by the scores of 7-5, 6-0, after which he and Dr. Diy won a doubles match which placed them in the semi-final round of the series.
The_following day, Ampon bat- tled Kodero, Japan's No. 3 star, in a drizzling rain which fell so hard at times that the match wos interrupted several times. It was in this match that Ampon dis- played the fighting heart that every champion must have to stay at the top.
Effects Of Weather
the
The rain and the accompany- ing chilly weather affected Filipino lad's game and he drop- ped the first set, 2--6. He won the second set 6-4, but in the third set it looked as if the two- day gruelling grind was proving too thuch 'tor the diminutive 19- year-old star. The Japanese 'act ran. the score tip to 25 and it was set point when the Mighty Mile turned the tide, and finally converted what seemed certain defeat into a gloribus victory. He won the next three games to deuce the set score and then staged dalged battle with the Japanese ace, finally winning the set by the score of 11-0, thereby annexing the match.
a
Aimpon was to have met Tsuru- ta for the open championship butj rain washed-out all-the-remaining| games in the Osaka meet and, the final match was not staged. But the Japanese tennis critics were agreed that Ampon would have beaton Tsuruta and they cofrede the cheerful little Ellipino
star ns king of the tennis courts In this half of the world.
A steadying influence....
