NEW NAZI TRICK ON THEIR RADIO

The Germans are employing a new radio trick in an effort to cause an- xiety in Britain.

Recently they broadcast the names of several British naval ratings who have been taken prisoner.

The same names, those of men

from the destroyer Glowworm, were given over the German radlo several weeks ago. The relatives of

• the mon have long since received the official Intimation from the Ad- miralty of their capture.

It is obvious that the narnes have been repeated, not as reassuring gesture to the men's families, but to give the public the impression that a British warship has been sunk within a short time of the broadcast.

"HELP" FOR ALLIES

IN WASHINGTON HARASSED OFFCIALS SAID THEY WERE BE- ING OVERWHELMED BY SUGGÉS- TIONS FROM AMATEUR INVEN- TORS ON HOW THE ALLIES CAN WIN THE WAR.

Among the suggestions received by the Government are:

Liquid cement which, sprayed on attacking troops, would harden them at once. The enemy would then become involuntary statues uh- 'til the cement was chipped off and

they were taken prisoner;

Magic grease which, dropped into barrels of rifles and cannon, would en- able bullets and shells to travel! twenty times faster;

Parachute bombs which would be dropped in front of approaching enemy planes, which would be expected to fly into them and be obligingly anni- hilated.

METAL DUMPS IN VILLAGE

New Scheme For

Saving Scrap

A new step in the national salvage campaign is a plan for village metal dumps.

With depots under voluntary: work-- ers to which old iron and tins in villages may be taken, the scheme will tidy up the country-side, provide raw material for munitions and aid the Red Cross, to which the net pro ceeds ago,

Since December, total salvage sales have risen from £30,000 to £125,000, and waste-paper collections from 4,500 tons a month to 16,500 tons. More than 100,000 tons of iron and steel scrap are now saved each month.

Old tins are a salvage problem. While best grades of scrap are worth up to £5 a ton, tins, of which 10,000 are needed to make a ton, only "fetch 35s at de-tinning works.

Old cars and lorries represent, on the average, a ton of iron and steel each. They also contain parts which are now particularly valuable as spares, Hence motor dumps are not being dis- turbed for the present.
