(Continued from Page 10)
In this one short trip I am long enough on board to be astonished at the sang-fraid of those who sleep be- neath the mining deck with those hun- dreds of loaded mines nearly touching their pillows.
Down below in their snug quarters the greasers, laugh it off, say it's their own choice as they could sleep in hammocks on the main deck but here they are nearer their work.
In the leading seamen's mess I run into William (Carter), whom I first encountered checking runways on the mining deck.
"Quite a change from driving a No. 17 bus. That seems years ago now."
They listen to the wireless, they play Mah Jong in this mess, they do their ironing with an electric iron which somebody bought and hires out. They are good company, travelled, in diverse trades, with diverse yarns to tell. Mine-laying crops up now and then; and three times different peo- ple say, "it's all right so long as we make a good laying."
From stem to stern a rare feeling of excitement shows in a smile here, a snatch of whistling there, a glint in the eye of youngsters and veterans alike who realise the supreme task is approaching, of stewards slipping on jersies for service stations, of chef leaving the galley, of the wardroom emptying of officers.
THERE IS A FIRST NIGHT
ATMOSPHERE
It is a first night, start of a race, birth of a child atmosphere.
And, as usual, it is relieved by cups.
of tea.
Down in the centre of the mining deck a billy of strong tea appears in the tense twilight of preparedness. We gather round. "Mind this sugar, it's very sweet," says a youngster, who has only been at sea a matter of months, in a steady voice.
"Whem!" We say, afterwards, as we alter course: and this time I am not the only one who says it aloud.
JAPANESE
RAID IN FRENCH CONCESSION
Shanghai, To-day. Japanese military patrols co-operated with French po- lice in raids carried out in the French Concession against "anti-Japanese ele- ments."
Well-known local Chinese business men were found among those ar- rested.
This action suggests that a policing arrangement was included in several "local adjustments" made between the Japanese and French authorities dur- ing the past week,
,
Previously the French authorities had adopted an intransigent attitude over Japanese proposals for
"co- operation."--Reuter.
CONTROL OF VEHICULAR TRAFFIC
London, To-day.
In order to prevent roads urgently required for military movements being blocked by non-essential traffic, the Ministry of Transport has made an order empowering Regional Com- missioners to prohibit the use vehicles or any class of vehicles in
their areas.

The order will in the
main affect private and other vehicles which are not used for purposes essential to the life of the community the prosecution of the war, Reuter.
