SANK
STANDING WAIST HIGH in water, British seamen re- mained at the guns in their sinking warship and continued. to fire at German planes which were bombing her.
This was the dramatic story told by survivors of the destroyer Wessex which the Admiralty announced had been lost. Six ratings were killed and fifteen wounded.
The ship received a radio order to go to the French coast to concentrate her guns on the shore batteries,
For several hours the Wessex, from a position just outside the French. harbour, hammered away and did terrific damage to the enemy.
80 harrassing was her fire that the Germans replied with a mass air
attack.
The German planes made a non- stop series of attacks. As each plane swooped down the Wessex's anti-air- craft guns replied, and several of the bombers were hit and crashed in flames alongside her.
Meanwhile her long-range guns con- tinued to pound away at their ori- ginal target.
Several bombs fell on the Wessex and she began to sink.
R.A.F. DASH TO AID
The British seamen stood at their posts. Then came relief. A forma- tion of seven British fighter planes raced to the rescue. Immediately the German bombers turned and fled for home.

It was possible that the fate of civilisation was hanging in the balance, and that the events of the next weeks and months might decide the course of history for hundreds of years to come....
