If one would gain a full mea- sure of success at golf in the com- to train ing era he will have mentally as well as physically. Jimmy Demaret has already struck the keynote of this me- thod and right now the tune is golden in quality from golf earn- ings. Possibly when Jimmy was a youngster he used to howl when his many brothers and sisters set up an incessant playing din while he was studying. Here was dis- traction at its worst but Jimmy rode it out and before long was able to keep his attention on his All books despite interruptions.

On the golf course now he can but shut his mind to anything the shot at hand. He can do this at a second's notice, a strain sav- ing factor for between shots De- . maret can walk along with all the insouciance of a man about town.

This method of keeping concen- tration in a fluid state, turning it on and off like a tap isn't a bad idea. It eliminates tenseness and staleness. subsequent strain and

I see that Colonel L, A. Newnham, President of the Hong Kong Area Sports Board, has protested too, against the criticism of the Army Swimming Committee by a contem- porary. I find myself in entire agree- ment with Colonel when he says "The cancellation

of the Army entry for the proposed Y.M.C.A. Triangular Tournament should not be taken as evidence of a lack of interest or slack organisation on the part of the Army teams; but rather of the increased pressing ur- gency of defence activities which un- fortunately made this cancellation necessary."

Directly the situation allows, doubt, the Army teams will get down to hard training to make up for time lost, for swimming is the most popular sport amongst the squaddies at this time of the year. For the same reasons' no

polo inter-unit water matches have taken place, but many enthusiasts have been making the best of their 'off duty' hours by snatching a short period in the water. 'Jock' Andrews, captain of the R.A.S.C. water polo team, has been in hospital, but it is anticipated that he will be out and swimming again in a few days.

SWIMMING is by no means the only sport that has suffered from the recent events and by the heavy rain, tennis has been completely out of the question and many fans of that sport have been finding substitute in

Table Tennis. On Tuesday night the Medicals (Com- bined Military Hospital, Kowloon) played a strong St. Andrew's Club team, at St. Andrew's Church Hall. The result was an overwhelming win for the Civvies by 16 games to 3. The Medicals were represented by P. Johns, F. Jacobs, F. Evans, B. Gosling, E. Ward (Royal Artillery) and 'Lofty' Richards (R.A.S.C.). The two last- named players are on detachment with the Medical Corps at Kowloon and will be regular members of the Medi- cals' team.

During this match each player played his opponent twice, once with the heavy English type ball and once with the light Chinese type ball. This idea goes to St. Andrews players and they have adopted it because when they play Chinese teams they have to use the light ball, while Army teams invariably insist on using the heavy ball.

The heavy ball, as used by the Army teams is, I believe, known as the stan- dard ball and used in the World Championship series. The Army Lea- gue when formed will no doubt insist on the use of the heavy ball.

Amongst the spectators was "Tich' Adams, Service Corps Table Tennis Secretary, who has dated the Medicals for this coming Friday evening, the Golf match to be played at Whitfield Bar-

Before the match on Tuesday even- ing several squaddies were seen in action on the tables, including Cyril Logan, better known as an Army cric- keter, and 'Nobbie' Clark, who made his debut in Colony sport during last football season with the R.A.S.C. soon after his arrival from Shanghai, where he was serving in the Police Force prior to his rejoining the Army.
