STOP PRESS
- London, To-day. With the object of ensuring that the French Fleet would not be used against Great - Britain, steps were taken ear- ly yesterday morning to place all French men-of-war in Bri- tish ports under British con- trol, says the Ministry of In- formation.
The operation is said to have been carried out suc- cessfully with a few casualties "which occurred owing to a misunderstanding."
At the same time, vessels in ports in North Africa were offered certain conditions de- signed solely for the purpose of keeping them out of Ger- man hands.
It was explained to the French officer in command that if none of the conditions were accepted, "Britain was prepared to take every step in order to ensure that none of the vessels would be used against her for the future prosecution of the war."
"His Majesty's Govern- ment deeply regret that the | French admiral at Oran re- fused to accept any of the conditions proposed, with the inevitable result that action had to be taken against French vessels in that locality."
These preceding statements were made in Parliament last night by the Prime Minister. The House was presumably sitting in secret session. Reuter.
Oran is the French naval base in North Africa.
