Germans Continue Operations: Situation Obscure
NO
ARMISTICE
AGREEMENT YET
LONDON, TO-DAY.
FIVE DAYS HAVE ELAPSED SINCE MARSHAL PETAIN ANNOUNCED THE PROMINENT
FRENCH DECISION TO SUE FOR AN ARMISTICE BUT UP TO A LATE HOUR LAST NIGHT NOTHING HAD DEVELOPED TO CLARIFY THE SITUATION.
STRONG SPANISH ATTACKS ON BRITAIN
There is, on the other hand, the greatest obscurity about the negotiations,
although reports are many and conflicting. The French Radio and Havas said that the French plenipotentiaries left Bordeaux for the German- nominated rendezvous, which has not been dis- closed, but Berlin said they had not left. The Italian official news agency, Stefani, put out the remarkable report that the negotiations were completed, the plenipotentiaries were on their way back to Bordeaux and that hostilities would cease to-day (Friday) or to-morrow. Rome Radio put out a similar report, which lacks any con- firmation from the French side. (If there is any truth in the report, it would suggest that the French took one look at the terms and decided that continuation of the negotiations would be a waste of time).
ས
Berlin, To-day. The French Government has informed the German Government that its peace plenipotentiaries are:-
General Huntziger, M. Leon Noel,
Vice-Admiral Leluc and General of the Air Force Bergeret. This is according to the official
German news agency.
The agency adds: "Because of the difficulties of communication through Spain, the French Government's com- munication did not reach the German Government until 1 o'clock on Thurs- day morning.
"It was transmitted to the Fuehrer at 4 o'clock whereupon the German the High Command at once took necessary steps for reception of the French delegates."-Reuter.
