MAURITIUS OFFER

TO EMPIRE A

SHELTER UNDER MONUMENT

King William-strect Tube Station, 70 feet below the Monument, in the heart of the City of London, has been con- . verted into an air raid shelter. It will accommodate 2,000 of the employees of the offices in Regis House and King William-st. House.

The idea of putting the station and tunnel to practical use as an under- ground shelter after they had been closed for 40 years has been carried out.. by Dron and Wright, managers of the United City Property Trust Ltd.

As there was only one entrance to the shelter from Regis House they ob- tained permission from the London Transport Board to construct a new shaft, 64ft deep, with a spiral staircase connecting King William-street House at the other end of the station.

This provides a necessary alterna- tive entrance or exit, and at the same time utilises the old station for the oc- cuplers of both properties. A feature of the reconstruction is a mezzanine floor of steel and concrete in the old station portion of the scheme.

Something like £20,000 has been spent on the provision of the shelter.
