MR. A. DUFF-COOPER, the Minister for Informa- tion, broadcasting to Canadian, American and home listeners last night, said: "Mussolini has timed his blow with characteristic cowardly trea- chery. It will be remembered for generations as one of the vilest things in history.

"Mussolini has waited for more than nine months, until France has fought desperately against great odds. At last the opportunity to stab an old friend in the back in the hour of that friend's greatest peril has proved too strong a temptation for Mussolini to resist.

"It is also very tragic that there is so much we love and admire in Italy and the Italian people.

"Cobber" was 22 years of age-and a native of Wellington.

Mr. Fraser, the N.Z.. Prime Minis- ter, paid a deep tribute to the young "Ace," whose death, he said, has caused the deepest sorrow all through the Dominion.-Reuter.
