ISOLATIONIST DELUSION
Washington, To-day.
THE CHINA MAIL, JUNE 11, 1940.
A significant reference to American isolationists was made by President Roosevelt in his speech at Charlottesville läst night.
He said: "Some still hold to the now obvious delusion that we of the Unit- ed States can safely permit the United States to become a lone island in a world dominated by the philosophy of force.
“Such an island may be the dream of those who still talk and vote as isola- tionists. Such an island represents to me and to the overwhelming majority of Americans to-day the hellish nightmare of a people without freedom, a people lodged in prisons and handcuffed, hungry and fed through bars from day to day by contemptuous and unpitying masters of other continents.

ROOSEVELT PROMISES
AID TO ALLIES
CHARLOTTEVILLE (VA.), TO-DAY.
A PROMISE THAT THE UNITED STATES WOULD EXTEND ITS MATERIAL RESOURCES TO THE OPPONENTS OF FORCE WAS MADE BY PRESI- DENT ROOSEVELT IN AN ADDRESS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA LAST EVENING. The President said the people and Government of the United States had seen with the utmost and urgent grave disquiet the decision of the Ita- lian Government to engage in hostilities. The sympathies of the American Republics lay with those nations which were giving their life- blood in the combat against the gods of force and hate.
