Hitler Throwing More Reserves Into Battle FRENCH HOLDING
MUSSOLIN'S GRIMLY ON
DISGUISE CAST ASIDE
London, To-day. "Now the issue is clear. The disguise of temporising with re- ligion has been cast aside," writes Cardinal Hinsley, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westmin- ster, in a statement following Italy's entry into the war.
"The leaders of Fascism have broken with Christian civilisa- tion. Fascism has become radi- cal Nazism, committed to the task of aiding and abetting Hit- ler's programme-to pillage and enslave.”—Reuter,

YESTERDAY AFTERNOON FRENCH MILITARY CIRCLES, COMMENTING
ON THE SITUATION, SAID HITLER IS GAMBLING FOR VICTORY WITH THE WHOLE OF GERMANY'S FORCES.
The French army, despite numerical inferiority, are holding their own everywhere with an energy reminiscent of the grim and resolute stand at Verdun over 20 years ago which won victory for France.
The battle is increasing in intensity every hour on
the whole front from the sea to the Argonne.`

The following are quotations from in Champagne the enemy resumed the Mussolini's writings and sayings:-
1. From an article in "Il Popolo d'Italia" on May 17, 1915.-"After 30 years Italy has won her autonomy, and an alliance which never was, and could never be popular, has been de- nounced. Italy turns westwards from the Triple Entente. We are freed from the heavy Germán tutelage and from the repugnant, company of the Austrians. We turn to ourselves. Here also the sane and right diplo macy of the people has conquered. We will fight at the side of the French, of the Belgians, of the Serbs, of the English, of the Russians, We will close without intervention a circle of fron and fire around the empires res- ponsible for the European configgra- tion. 2. A letter to "Il Popolo d'Italia" on September 14, 1916.-"In the mass of the people there is a diffused and profound hatred against the Germans and sympathy for the Belgian people." 3. An extract from a speech made to the communale of Bologna on May 24, 1918-"If Germany should win we must bear in mind the most certain and total ruin which would result. Extent Of Advance
(ŠPECIAL TO “CHINA MAIL")
Paris, To-day. The French military spokesman, discussing the situation at the front, said that there could be no doubt that the extent of the advance in the last two days had increased as compared with the early stages of the battle.
The High Command, however, re- mains calm and confident, and vigorous counter-attacks, have been carried out with success.
The German advances have been achieved mainly on the Allied left flanks, where armoured units have reached the Seine at several points. In the Argonne, where strenuous efforts were made, the enemy was thrown back, after
temporary ad- vantage.
Later, in the same speech, Musso- lini said: "We will win because the

M. Reynaud has gone to the front, while in Paris life goes on scarcely changed. The usual well-dressed crowds are to be seen in the streets, providing a sharp contrast with the
tremendous struggle which has now "approached to within 30 miles of the
capital.'
The U.S. Ambassador has announced his intention of staying in his Embassy in Paris for the duration of the war, even should the capital be taken by the Germans. Havas.

Istanbul, To-day.
It is reported that Rumania has asked the members of the Balkan Entente Council to hold an urgent meeting in Bucharest.
The intention apparently is to examine the international situation and proclaim once more the

It is rumoured that Bulgaria will send an observer to the meeting. Havas.
