OVER THOUSAND TANKS DESTROYED
(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL "'):
PARIS, TO-DAY. WITHOUT REGARD TO TERRIFIC LOSSES, THE GERMANS ARE FLINGING DIVISION ON DIVI- SION INTO THE ATTACK, SAID A FRENCH SPOKESMAN YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, AND THE ORDER GIVEN BY HITLER SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN TO “GET THROUGH NO MATTER WHAT IT COSTS."
The
The dominating German war policy seems to be to make
eyery effort to avoid a second winter of war. Germans are short of materials, and the present ter- rific offensive is the result.
"We are confident, however, even in this grave time,"-the-spokesman-went -on. The French defence works offer very great resistance and are ex- tremely efficient.
In the middle of battle, predictions would be premature, he said, German war methods do not allow one to make the usual forecasts.
Nevertheless, as a Swiss paper said, apropos the German "drive at all costs," it is "through victories of the
sort that one dies."
1,000 Tanks Lost
The spokesman estimated that dur- ing the past four days the Germans have lost almost 1,000 tanks. Three French batteries alone destroyed German tanks.

London, To-day.
Over 100 seamen -rescued from the armed merchant cruiser Carinthia, sunk by a U-boat, arrived at a British port last night; one of the men stated the torpedo killed two officers and two ratings.
When the liner stopped, the sub- marine appeared on the surface but the fire of the Carinthia's guns forced it to submerge, and the Carinthia's crew kept the U-boat at bay by fir- ing at her whenever she showed on the surface, causing her to dive with- out getting another shot at the crip- pled liner.
Two warships came on the scene about eight hours after the liner was. first attacked and they were after- wards joined by a tug.
The Carinthia's crew were transfer- red to the warships except for a ske- leton crew who were taken off short-
ly before the Carinthia sank 32 hours after she was first attacked.-Reuter.
