LAWN BOWLS PAIRS
Fage
Jillott And Bagley Should Extend Fincher And Fraser
(By "SKIP")
HE first series of games in the Colony Pairs Lawn Bowls Championship take place this afternoon, weather per- mitting, and lawn bowls fans will be well catered for on both sides of the harbour.
On the Police green there is to be, a domestic affair tts the Com- mittee has decided this year. that where players are all members of the same club they may play on their own green if all are agreeable. The opponents are Riddell and Aitken and Macdonald and Mackenzie, and I hesitate to make a forecast here. Cheesman and Thompson of K.B.G.C. meet a Talkoo pair in Main and Munro, and a good game should re- sult in a win for the islanders.
Leo Silva and Johnny Ribeiro of Recreio “A” should beat the pair from Stanley with ease. Carrying on round the Valley one will find two Portuguese pairs on view. J. A. Re- medios and L. A. Gutierrez, former singles champion, meet Post and Carey of Police on the Civil Service green, and I think that the greater experience of Post, who will no doubt lead against Remedios, will turn the scales Joe Landolt and Dick Basa meet A. M. Rumjahn and K. M. Omar on this same green, and should be able to go into the next round.
|
should be seen with my fancy being for the latter pair.
Three games will take place on the Civil Service green on Wednesday, these completing the First Round of the competition.
Mulcahy and Carr, a strong pair on current form, play Phelps and Coelho of Craigengower and should have little to worry about,, whilst Charlie Rosselet's play should ensure vic- fory for him and his new partner, A. A. Razack, against K. M. and S. M. Rumjahn.
A Talkoo pair in Melrose and Chalmers should go forward as a result of their game against Solina and Lam of Craigengower, although the former has improved a good deal lately.
BOWLS TOURNEY Three matches in the first round of the lawn bowls pairs championship -- were played yesterday.
Green
At Kowloon Bowling Club, A. M. and U. M. Omar, former holders, entered the second round at the expense of P. M. N. da Silva and F. A. Xavier, 24-14.
Jack Watson and Gelling of H. K. Football Club meet the two Minus on the same green, and the Minus will probably be plus at the finish.
Two games take place at H.K.F.C., and a Craigengower pair is taking part in each. Pau and Ladd will have to play well to keep up with Willie Walker and Jack Deakin, as the former is bowling a natty wood these days and will prove the key to the situation. The other match, in which On the Police Green yesterday, J. Penney and Coates are opposed to S. Riddell and J. C. Aitken
McGowan and Harry Strange of
T. Lock and W. K. Way beat their club-mates J. W. Leonard and M. J. Medina at Craigengower by 29-14. At one time Leonard and Medina were leading 10-2 but then Lock and Way recovered well, eventually to win easi- ly.
beat
C.S.C.C., should prove more even, All R. McKenzie, and J. W. MacDonald four are first-class players, but I by 27 shots to 13. think Alf Coates has just "that little extra” which will bring victory.
Mainland Matches
Now over to the mainland, where our first call is at Kowloon Football Club, where three games are down for. decision. First out of the hat is Hyde-Lay and Hall against Hill and Bob Meadows of K.C.C., which the former pair should win. Harrower and Lockhart are a steady pair, but will have to give of their best to beat. Henry and John Basto.
GOLF RESULTS
Following golf results are notified by Royal Hong Kong Golf Club:---
Captains Cup: June Qualifying competi on Old Course Fanling Saturday and Sun-
day.
W. W. C. Shewan 78-8 and G. T. Thom- son 92-22 qualify. Other scores were E. 'T. McMullen 78—7—71; T. E, Pearce 85——13
23. L. C. Pearce 83-11-12 and D, Humphrey's 81–9–72.
The optional pool was cancelled. Happy Valley tirat Summer Singles. Second Round-T. B. Low (11) beat A. McKellar
Another Portuguese pair in Xavier and Luz meet the two Glendinnings, one of these father and son com() at 20th; F. C. Barry, w, o. A. C. I. binations, and should be able to pull Bowker scratched; G. M. Park (6) beat R. G. Parker (8) 3 and 17 5. F. Chubb. (15) it off comfortably..
beat G. T. May (13) 2 up; Major, Harvey (8) beat H. Smith (8) 3 und 2; Lieut. Carter (9) beat D. Humphreys (7) 4 and 3; C. C. Stark (9) beat W. S. Hillier (8) 4 and 3: K. S. Robertson,(5) beat T. J. Frice (8) at 19th.
At K.B.G.C. Howell and Craig, who were runners-up in 1938, should be able to beat Williamson and Charlie Thom of Kowloon Dock. Bill Burling and Arthur Rakusen, whose play I só favourably com- mented on in my notes on Friday, meet Mose and Howard of Kowloon Tong and will, I think, prove to have too many shots in their repertoire.
Three K.F.C. pairs play at Kow- loon Dock the same evening, but I fancy only Eastman and Brown to win. They are opposed to Sweeney and Revie of the home club, so I presume the match was mutually arranged, as I do not think that East- man is a member of the Dock Club, A Kowloon Tong pair in Tang and Jimmy Wong may get the better of Mezger and Fuller, though there should not be much in it, whilst I have little hesitation in tipping Hillon and Stainton of Taikoo to eliminate Woodcock and Hughes, though I have no wish to discourage these two comparatively new players.
To-morrow's Games To-morrow, at Recreio, Jillott and Bagley of Prison Officers Club may easily prove a hard obstacle for Fra- ser and Fincher to overcome. I think they will do it, but there may be an upset. Xavier and Lewis of Craigen- gower meet Ben Evans and Bob Hall on the same green, and one may ex- pect a close game with the odds Fulghtly in favour of the Kowloo
players.
