THREE DESTROYERS LOST

It is officially announced that British warships are giv- ing all possible help to the British and French land forces operating on the French coast under heavy enemy pressure.
Warships are giving sup- porting and covering fire to troops impeding the enemy's movement, and have inflict- ed considerable punishment upon the German advanced forces.

Three Destroyers Lost Operations of this nature cannot be carried out without losses. The destroyers Grafton, Grenade and Wakeful, and certain small auxiliary craft, have been lost.

One small transport, the Aboukir, of 689 tons, has been sunk. The spirit and conduct of all con- cerned are beyond all praise.
The operations are proceeding. Reuter.
Grafton and Grenade, built in 1936, 125 carry a normal complement of officers and men. They are 1,335 tons each. Wakeful, built in 1935, is a vessel of 1,100 tons.
The Navy has now lost 17 of 179 destroyers in service at the outbreak of war, but several have since been launched.
