INDIA'S WAR CONTRIBUTION

London, To-day. India's economic contribu- tion to the Allied war effort, already impressive, is steadi- ly expanding both in volume and diversity.

Her geographical position having re- gard to strategic considerations makes it clear that her most important econo- mic function is to act as a supply cen- tre for all points of consequence from Egypt to Malaya.

Comparison between India's econo- mic contribution in the Great War and the present one discloses two vital differences.

Firstly, India is far better prepared to meet calls upon her. In last war, she was hampered by her inadequate economic equipment and it was not until 1917 that the organisation creat- ed began to function in effective fashion..

Secondly, the intervening years have seen remarkable developments in in- dustrial output.

India has advanced to a prominent place among the great industriaj na- tions of the world and nowadays it le only her vast reserves of raw materials which are of consequence but also the variety and quality of her manufacturers.

At the same time, when expansion schemes are complete, it is anticipated that India will become an important centre of munitions production, able not only to meet her own needs but, to an appreciable extent, those of the Allled forces abroad.

Even now, it is computed that India manufactures 90% of her require- ments.-British Wireless.

U.S. COUNCIL FOR NATIONAL DEFENCE

to

(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL") Washington, To-day. President Roosevelt's intention appoint a special Council for the Co- ordination of National Defence was announced yesterday by Mr. Stephen Early, White House press secretary, who specified that the Council would include civilian experts, as well as members of the Government.

However, the President's plans are not yet definite, and no councillors have been selected as yet. These will include representatives of industry. finance, agriculture, labour, transport and communications.

The President's main object is to prevent price fluctuations, which oc- curred during the first Great War. Havas.

ENGLAND WORKS ON SUNDAY

LONDON, TO-DAY. WHILE THE KING AND ARCH- BISHOP OF CANTERBURY LED THE PEOPLES OF THE EMPIRE IN PRAYER AT WESTMINSTER AB-

BEY YESTERDAY, A LARGE PART

OF BRITAIN, WAS WORKING ON THE PRODUCTION OF MUNITIONS IN REPLY TO THE GOVERNMENT DIRECTION THAT EVERY WORKER ON A WARTIME TASK SHOULD CONTINUE AS THOUGH IT WAS A WEEK-DAY.

The "Sunday Times" described this as a course entirely justified by the perilous urgency of the fighting out- look which is without precedent in British history.

Reports from different parts of the country show that transport services co-operated in the highest degree to ensure that workers arrived at fac- tories in a normal week-day manner and the atmosphere of cheerful re- solve among the workers generally to give of their best, an extremely en- couraging sign of the determined spirit of the country.

A Union representative in a muni- tion works told the Press that the men were resolved to raise production to the limit humanly possible and were tremendously determined to put every~~ thing they knew into their jobs.--Bri- tish Wireless.

HITLER AND. IMAM

THE

CAIRO, TODAY. "WAFD EL MASRI” DE- NOUNCES BERLIN'S RADIO LIES IN WHICH IT WAS DECLARED HITLER: HAD EXCHANGED FRIENDLY LETTERS WITH THE IMAM OF YEMEN.

The truth is the opposite, writes the paper. The Imam sent Hitler a mes- sage asking him to terminate the war and preserve the world from the butchery in which the Germans are | shedding innocent blood. Such was the real message, and we are in a position to affirm that Hitler has not answered the letter.
