PARTIAL SUCCESS OF GREAT

GERMAN ONSLAUGHT

London, To-day.

GERMAN ATTACKS ON THE Allied positions are continu- ing without respite on a line right through Belgium and down the French frontier to Luxemburg. In operations on this scale, it is always difficult to get a clear and up-to-date picture, but statements by respon- sible London and Paris quarters gave the following outline for the position late yesterday afternoon:- The Dutch province of Zeeland is still in Allied hands. Over the frontier, in Belgium, Antwerp is the bastion of the British left flank. Further south, the Allies are holding positions covering Brussels on a line down to Namur. German attacks are heavy at some points.

The enemy attacked with tanks, but did not press the push very strongly, with the result that he suf- fered heavy losses, especially of tanks. A French counter-attack drove the Germans back.

South of Namur, the line runs via Dinant to Sedan. The Germans are the making a great effort to cross Meuse in this sector.

German Progress Most of the German attempts have been driven back, but some have succeeded, notably at two or three points between, Namur and Dinant. Here, German advance guards cross- ed the river and built some bridges. The French ringed them in and have counter-attacked, with varying suc-

cess.

A great battle is raging on the Meuse where. the Germans have crossed the river south of Sedan and hold a salient about five miles deep. They hvae also crossed the Meuse at two or three points north of Dinant, making small bridgeheads. All these held by the crossings have been French.

The situation. is grave, it is added, but the battle may last for days and is proceeding normally;/

The Germans crossed the river at Sedan on Tuesday, using, it is Ger- said, the best troops in the man Army for the push. As a re- suit, they have a four or five mile salient in this sector.

The French fortifications here are not really part of the Maginot Line, although they are sometimes referred- to as such.
