EVENTUALITY NO. 1 FINDS ALLIES

WELL PREPARED

London, To-day.

After eight months of waiting, the most likely form of Ger- man offensive of all those we have been considering and generally discussing has been launched, comments Captain Cyril Falls, Military Correspondent of "The Times."

The Low Countries have as big a significance to-day as at any time in military history, and it is against them that Germany has moved.

The Allied command was as ready as one can ever hope to

be, and so were Holland and Belgium.

TURKEY PREPARES TO MOBILISE

Istanbul, To-day. Measures to ensure instant mobilisation in the event of a sudden emergency are now being taken but it is emphas ised they have no other signi- ficance.

They aim at bringing reserves up to strength; thus the military centres

in Istanbul have begun calling up for census purposes and for review of their cases, eleven classes of reser- vists from 25 to 35 years of age, inclusive.

Reserve officers of all ranks, in- cluding generals, must report for their military situation to be review- ed.-Reuter.

DRAGGING OUT OF AN OLD ALIBI

New York, To-day.

The columnist of "The Sun," Dave Boon, says: "As the Nazis choose to start a blitzkreig against Belgium and Holland in a 'religious season sacred to millions, they go out of their way to shock sensibilities. Those whom the Gods would destroy they first make Dictators, and the sound from heaven as of a rushing wind is not Hitler's air fleets but the rising in- dignation of the civilised world you would think Adolf would stop dragging out that old alibi about the Allies being about to do the invading first. Any moment now von Ribben- trop will have a White Paper with Belgians a bedtime story about the

and Dutch being in deadly peril of everyone except the Germans."-Reu- ter.

STANDARD FORMULA

OF THE REICH

Gothenburg, To-day. The newspaper "Goteborg Nytld" comments: "It seems that the Reich adopted a standard formula for at tacks on small States. We believe that Germany cannot conquer Belgium this time, and that Germany took a fatal step when, against history's teaching, she tried to smash this proud people's right to live." Reuter.

SHAMELESS REVERSAL

OF ROLES

Captain Falls thinks that a large number of defence schemes had been drawn up in view of various alterna- tives, so that possibly they could act- at once on receipt of a code-word, and he thought it quite likely that the present situation 'lies under the heading of "Eventuality No. 1."

Both the Allies and their intend- ed victims must have given thought to the use of parachute troops and troop planes, designed to Belze positions behind the main defences and to generally create, confusion, and also to the bombing of com- munications and nerve centres.

So far, these have constituted the main feature of the war, but the news that there

so far does not suggest have been any of the mass infantry

assaults of the last war. The inten- tion of the German command seemed to be to weaken the framework of

extent first,

No Tremendous Effort

The Germans have not yet put forth any tremendous efforts except in the air, and their hands are free to make any alternations in their plans they desire.

So, while all this looks like the crisis-especially as France has been bombed heavily and the Allies have been bombing military ob. Jectives in Germany -- even now, things might take an unexpected form.

If the Germans do go all out, the most likely form seems to be a drive through southern Holland, south of the main water defences, to the sea. This would cut Holland off from Al- lied help, and the Germans would then try to overrun the country and establish air bases for use against Britain.

We have not under-estimated this danger, but to capture aerodromes and to establish these as air bases are very different matters.

The parachute attacks so far do not seem to have been as successful as might have been expected. They are less suitable in thickly-populated countries than they were in Norway.

New York. To đây.

The "New York Post" says: "Pre- sident Rossevelt expressed the senti ments of the overwhelming majority of the American people when he con- demned the brutal and unprovoked invasion of the Low Countries before the Pan-American Scientific Con- gress. He answered the question 'can Americans live if the Allies are de- feated with a straightforward 'No.'

"Coming from a man who hates war as much as he hates Fascism, this was highly significant:"-Reuter
