A gigantic “back to the land" movement, on at least a. temporary basis, has been opened under the guidance of the Japan Young Men's As- sociation to relieve the cur- rent shortage of fodder and cereals,

The Association urges its 500,000 members to help cultivate vacant lots and raise corn, soya beans, rye, potatoes and fodder for cattle.

The Education and Agriculture and Fisheries Ministries are co-operating in the campaign.

INCREASES IN MANCHURIA COAL OUTPUT QUOTA

An increased coal output, to satisfy the constantly increasing demand, has been decided by the Manchukuo Plan- ning Bureau.

An increased coal quota will be given the steel and electric industries. Considerable quantities of coal will be imported from North China, and steel works which last year curtailed pro- duction considerably owing to lack of coal, will work at full capacity.

On the other hand, "for special rea- sons", only a minimum supply of coal will be provided for gas production, heating and several other industries. Shipments of coal to Japan are ex- pected to be much larger this year al- though they will not reach the full amount originally planned-Havas.
