FEWER WORKLESS
LONDON, TO-DAY.
THE NUMBER OF UNEMPLOYED PERSONS ON REGISTERS IN GREAT BRITAIN FELL BELOW ONE MIL- LION DURING THE MONTH END- ED-APRIL 15 AND 18 THE LOWEST RECORDED SINCE THE END OF 1920, WHEN THE EXTENDED UN- EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE SCHEME CAME INTO OPERATION.
The total was 982,696 fewer by 671,695 than at the same time last year.
The number of wholly unemployed men on the register is now little more than half what it was in April, 1939, while the number of men temporarily laid off is little more than one-third of the figure at the earlier date. The figure for women shows a slight im- provement on a year ago.
Unemployment is now very low in metal goods manufacture for munition. purposes and in the engineering, mo- tor vehicle and aircraft industries. The rate in the engineering and mo- tor-vehicle manufacture is not much
GERMAN AIM TO DRAG IN ITALY
Tho Allied Governments aro In Bouth watching developments and south-east Europe. It seems to be the German aim to provoke an Anglo-Italian Incident and so force, Italy into hostliitles against Britain. sug- With this object view, it is gested, Germany may invade Jugo- slavia. Italy would then probably attempt a comparable advance on the ground that she must protect her own interests in the Mediterranean area. In such circumstances, France would agree in insisting, I am convinced, that the Allies must immediately help Jugoslavia.
The British and French Govorn⚫ manta would not take kindly to any Italian attempt to extend a “protec- Mediter- torate" over any other ranean States while still maintain- Ing that she was "non-belligerent." Britain desires the Italian Govern- ment to explain why it has instructed

LOSS OF AFRIDI
H.M.S. DURING
LONDON, TO-DAY. AFRIDI, WHOSE LOSS AN AERIAL BOMBARD- MENT WHILE NAMSOS. WAS BE- ING EVACUATED WAS REPORTED BY THE ADMIRALTY YESTERDAY AFTERNOON; WAS A DESTROYER OF THE TRIBAL CLASS AND A SISTER-SHIP OF H.M.S. COSSACK, OF ALTMARK FAME.
A vessel of 1,800 tons, she was fitted as a flotilla leader and carried a com- plement of about 200 men.
Britain still has nearly 170 destroy- ers in service, even if no new ships have been put into service since the war began. In September, there were 179, of which 10 have been sunk.
This total does not include H.M.S. Hardy, which ran aground in the first action at Narvik but has since been refloated.
Presumably, the sinking of Afridi is the basis for the German claim on Friday to have sunk a battleship and a cruiser of the "York" class. The Nazi claims have been officially denied. but the Germans continue to make it and have now "sunk" another.-Reu- ter.
