Tokyo, To-day. Trade circles are now urging the development of Japanese trade, with the Netherlands East Indies replacing trade with the Scandinavian countries which has been paralysed as a con- sequence of the extension of the Euro- pean conflict.

The trade of the NE.I with the Scandinavian countries, though not very important, included imports and exports which Japan is quite ready to take over.

Imports of cement, matches, paper, machinery, metalware and tools from Scandinavia to the Indies have stop- ped since the German invasion of Denmark and Norway, while the Indies have lost a good customer for copra, coffee, gutta percha, oll seeds and fodder.
