JAPAN AND U.S. NAVAL STRATEGY
(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL")
TOKYO, TO-DAY. EXTENSION OF THE CRUISING RADIUS OF THE AMERICAN FLEET IS THE MAIN CONCERN OF THE JAPANESE NAVAL AUTHORITIES, AC- CORDING TO MASANORI ITO, FOREMOST JA- PANESE NAVAL CRITIC, WRITING IN THE “JA- PAN CHRONICLE."
Mr. Ito stressed that all new American warships are de- signed with a view to extending their cruising radius, envisaging, operations far from their bases.
The American naval building plan, he says, thus appears to be based on offensive operations in waters thou- sands of miles from America, and the western Pacific is evidently regarded
APPEAL FOR
by the U.S. Navy as "the scene of a RED CROSS
hypothetical battle."
Mr. Ita reveals nothing about, the OF CHINA
new Japanese warships, although he strongly emphasises that their arm- ament has been strengthened at the expense of cruising, range. This, he says, testifies that Japanese strategy "aims at defensive operations. in the western Pacific, without the in- tention to carry naval warfare across the Pacific."—Havas.
